Router Bit Profile, Diameter and Shank: What to Confirm Before Ordering
The three dimensions that make a router-bit inquiry easier to review and less likely to create a machine-fit problem.

Tool selection becomes clearer when the profile, cutting diameter and shank are confirmed as one set. These details affect the workpiece result, the machine fit and the production method.
Profile defines the result
The profile is the shape created in the workpiece: for example, a straight groove, a chamfer, a roundover or a decorative edge. Send a drawing, a finished sample or a cross-section with the critical dimensions identified.
Diameter and cutting length define the reach
Cutting diameter affects the shape and width of the cut. Cutting length and overall length determine whether the tool can reach the required depth safely within the available setup. Check these values against the part drawing and toolpath.
Shank confirms the fit
The shank must match the router collet exactly. State whether the machine uses an imperial or metric collet, and do not substitute a near size. This simple check is essential before confirming a model.
Share the complete specification
When requesting a quotation, include all three details together with the material and machine. If a dimension is flexible, identify the critical one so the specification can be reviewed against available catalog or custom options.
